COMPOSTING is nature's process of recycling decomposed organic  matter into a rich soil. Especially while considering organic farming, COMPOSTING is a key ingredient.

COMPOSTING can be done in two ways : Organic composting and Vermi composting.

ORGANIC COMPOSTING

COMPOSTING is carried out by using the organic substances such as rotten vegetables and fruits, fruits and vegetable peelings, stock, juices etc. No chemical substances is encouraged.

VERMICOMPOSTING

COMPOSTING which is done with the aid of earthworm [ farmer's friend ], which improves the soil strength.

COMPOST with the proper mixture of water, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and micro organisms are allowed to break down organic matter to produce compost. Eg: Bacteria, Actinobacteria, Fungi - yeasts and molds, Protozoa and Rotifers aid in composting [ breaking down of organic matter ].

COMPOST PIT

A pit is dug and the essentials for composting are dumped into it, to undergo the process of composting

STEPS INVOLVED IN DEVELOPING COMPOST PIT

1. Dig the hole for your compost pit

2. Chop your composting materials finely

3. Add the organic materials to the compost pit

4. Place a board over the hole if you plan to add more scraps

5. Cover your compost with soil

6. Keep the compost pit wet while it is decomposing

7. Sow the plants above the compost after it has decomposed

ADVANTAGES OF COMPOSTING

1. Additive to soil

2. It supplies humus and nutrients

3. Destroy pathogens and unwanted wastes

COMPOSTING is a better way of improving the nutrient content and strength of the soil thereby increasing the same in the crop or plant, it benefits a lots to use. It shows a best way of organic waste disposal and use of beneficial worms and microbes around us. The use of chemical fertilizers can be very much decreased or avoided when organic or vermicomposting is opted to provide the essentials for the plant growth.

  1. If we see that vermicompost is very essential for the plants to grow and the worms are the helper to farmers . So the compost is important for harvesting.

  2. I totally agree with you,Manisha. I personally feel we should all resort to natural means like vermicompost and use chemicals in our fields as less as possible. Moreover, compost pit is not that hard to make.
